FAA-NORSEE Approved

About NORSEE

Per their Policy Statement PS-AIR-21.8-1602, the FAA has implemented an approval process to allow installation of Non-Required Safety Enhancing Equipment (NORSEE) in the general aviation (GA) and Rotocraft fleets. The issuance of design, and production approval for U.S. manufacturers per 14 CFR 21.8(d) is for NORSEE determined to be a minor change to type design and whose failure condition is minor, with provisions addressing failure conditions above minor.

Objective of NORSEE

Its intent is to measurably increase aircraft safety by standardizing the approval process of this special class of non-required equipment, while not bypassing the existing certification process or FAA oversight, and to encourage the installation of new technology safety enhancements into all aircraft product types.

A Minor/Major Alteration

NORSEE approval under this policy is not an approval for installation on the aircraft. The equipment becomes eligible for installation on the aircraft after approval. Installation must be accomplished either as a minor alteration or major alteration substantiated by FAA approved data such as field approval, follow on STC or other form of FAA approved installation data.
