ALPS FACEMASK

ALPS Facemask

CSC 0790aOne popular member of the Mountain High family of products are the, FAA-CAMI tested with the EDS-ip system, MH ALPS FaceMask and the MH ALPS-M (for microphone) FaceMask. The ALPS-M is outfitted with an electronic "Clear-Speak" ambient noise-canceling microphone that enables pilots to fly with safety and comfort with clear, crisp voice communication and is compatible with most aircraft systems. The mask is easy to put on and exceptionally comfortable as it does not require a polyvinyl bag. The ALPS or the ALPS-M FaceMask can be used with any of the MH oxygen systems, constant flow or EDS.
The constant flow mask is also compatable with most other constant flow systems that incorporate a flow meter.
Microphone can be exchanged from one ALPS mask to another or easly added to a non microphone ALPS mask.

ALPS Face mask FAA/CAMI testing and TSO applicability
.

The Alps series of nasal oral facemask system are, for the most part, unique to a new testing protocol established in part by MH Oxygen and FAA CAMI. FAA/TSO C64a, C89a and C103 are the base line requirements for a CAMI testing protocol that resulted in a test report titled ‘Performance Evaluation of Pulse Oxygen Designs Designated for General Aviation Use at Altitudes up to25,000 Feet Above Sea Level’ Report No. DOT/FAA/AM-06X. During the testing at CAMI, the Alps mask was expected to pass the physiological aspects outlined in the aft mentioned list of TSOs. Once this was established the Alps mask was subjected to several altitude chamber runs with several persons in both pulse demand and constant flow mode up to pressure altitudes of 25,000 ft.

The accumulator bag on many facemasks was primarily intended to provide a means to detect that oxygen is flowing and have also acted as a re-breather for medical applications requiring the mitigation of CO2 depletion. Many masks have check valve assemblies to reduce back flowing during exhalations. Almost all of the oxygen masks used in aviation are in part a hand-me-down from the medical oxygen therapy arena. In some instances, the accumulator bag has demonstrated a modest ability to provide a beneficial bolus of oxygen at the start of the inhalation phase. This has yielded the SBA class of passive phase dilution masks. A good example of this is the so-called ‘dixie-cup’ drop mask commonly used in passenger airlines. Many other types of SBA class nasal oral face mask designs came into existence designed specifically for aviation using the accumulator bag.

The accumulator bag was not included in the Alps series because the EDS electronic Pulse Demand System provided the indication for positive oxygen flow from an in-line flow indicator and annunciation indicators on the system, thus eliminating the immediate need of the bag. In addition, because of the immediate active response of the pulse demand system to inhalation efforts balancing the O2 and CO2 levels more actively, the accumulator bag was not needed and became the final configuration tested. It has been discussed that yet another TSO may be established as a result of this testing.

The Alps Face mask was tested up to 25,000 ft. with the EDSip system by FAA-CAMI.

Because of the growing global popularity of our EDS pulse-demand oxygen delivery technology with our Alps Face Masks, the FAA, USARMY and USAF decided that the pulse-demand oxygen delivery method needed to be tested. Therefore, it was thoroughly tested at the CAMI research facility in Oklahoma City. However, the report has yet to be released by the government printing office. Meanwhile, we have been given permission by the doctors of this project at CAMI to share the draft version at this time. Since all of our EDS products use the same delivery protocol we felt that you may be interested in the results.

Electro-Acoustical performance of the Alps Microphone

The Alps microphone is an amplified and buffered noise-canceling electret-condenser type. It is built into our custom housing for the ability to be fitted into the Alps mask as well as many other TSO civilian and Military type face masks. The shielded coaxial cable cable comes standard issue at ~1 Meter long. The connector is the standard 'PL68 or M642/5-1'and can be fitted to any type of aviation style fixed or rotor-wing microphone connector.

The Alps microphone has a frequency response for voice (300~3 KHz) has a better than 3 dbm variation through out this spectrum into ~600 Ohms. The variation from microphone to microphone is better than 6 dbm.

The noise canceling mechanism is entirely mechanical providing superior reliability and is focused on the energy spectrum where wind and engine noise is most prevalent, and can tolerate a modest amount of misalignment to the mouth.

The internal amplifier and impedance buffer is designed to meet TSO-C58a and is entirely self powered from the current loop provided by any standard aircraft band radio and/or integrated communication system designed to TSO-C139 or equivalent. In many cases the Alps microphone can replace a carbon type microphone. Please email us if you should have any technical questions.

ALPS Face mask and the BOSE headset
Nasal-oral facemasks with microphones can now operate properly with the BOSE (6-Pin LEMA connector) headset. Because both microphones inject into your audio system at once, you will need to switch-out the Bose microphone and switch-in the facemask microphone with this PA-100B microphone switch-over adapter. Without doing this your voice over the intercom and, most importantly, the radio will be degraded to the point that center will have trouble hearing you.

The PA-100B BOSE microphone-only switch-over adapter does nothing to the stereo earphone circuit. The Adapter has a switch (M for Mask, S for headset) that allows you to easily switch between the two microphones without fiddling with connectors.
